FLORIDA - Law enforcement officers from across the state graduated for the Florida Leadership Academy today but law enforcement jobs, just like other taxpayer funded positions, are in jeopardy.

Twenty-one high ranking officers in state, county, and city law offices received leadership certificates, at a time when raises are rare and some police stations are on hiring freezes.

Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp spoke at the graduation. Kottkamp says the governor is working to generate more revenue for law enforcement agencies.

"We know in the long term Florida's economy will turn around, Governor's very aggressive about economic development efforts, making sure we expand and grow our economy, while not just Florida and the country has down turn now, we think that the future looks very bright. And that's why we're working so hard to point to the future with our economic development efforts."

Kottkamp told the graduates the most important job of government is to protect its citizens which is hard to do with less money.

This year's budget cuts included hundreds of probation and some correctional officer positions.Police Graduation

Tropical Update:
We have three named storms in the Atlantic Ocean. The first is Hanna, which is over the Atlantic, east of Central Florida. Hanna may strike the southeast coast over the weekend. The next is Ike, and may be the most concerning for WEAR viewers. This category 3 hurricane has a five day track that puts it in the extreme southwestern Gulf Of Mexico. Finally, in the eastern Atlantic, we have Josephine, which will remain over the open waters for at least the next five days.
