Judy Burns had no problem finding summer camps for her son Richard. But, for Stewart, who is autistic, there were no facilities with open arms. So, this angel took wings and created a special place for parents and children just like hers. Judy; I told Susan, we need a camp for children with autism. They need to have something great to do in the summer. These kids can't even go to a movie. You know, half our children have never been to a movie with their parents. Five years ago, Judy Burns rallied a few parents and started a small camp at a Gulf Breeze Church. Today, it has grown to two sites in Pensacola. Rebecca Aman, Has two autistic children; I have two children with autism; a five year old and a 14 year old. Summers are very, very tough. Rebecca; To be able to bring them here to, not only to learn, but to stay structured and to stay focused, you can't top it. Kelly Aman, Rebecca's Daughter; There's other things for me to do here. I'm the only kid my age in our neighborhood so I enjoy being here a lot. Their ranges of autism run from mild to very severe. Table. What do you do on the table? You sit at the table and have dinner time. Every one of the 50 campers gets one-on-one instruction, therapy and play with trained professionals and committed volunteers. Cindi Wyman, Jagger's Mom; He's having a blast but at the same time, he's learning so much. Stop. What do you want? Up. I want up please, Good. Come on. Song; Good morning, good morning, good morning to you. Our day is beginning... Providing this kind of intensive structure and education as well as outings for the children, is not inexpensive. Judy; It has been a lot of work and a lot of knocking on doors and a little bit of begging involved in there too. Rebecca; She's got a wonderful vision. Wanting to help all the children; not just her own. She's our Angel. Judy; It makes me feel like I've done something important and good for... Cindi; There's just not that many opportunities for these kids like this. So, words can't even describe it. One mother summed it up in "one" word. Judy; She said, Judy, one of the things camp has done for me is given me hope. I think that's what camp is all about; it's about hope.
