Should beachfront homeowners have the right to keep people off their beaches?
Comment: They should have every right to as long as they maintain the beach but not if the public maintains the beach then the public has the right to access the beach. by David

Comment: I feel if the beach was restored by public tax money then the public should have access to that beach. The state could have left the beach the way it was. Ifeel if you live directly on the beach you should expect the erosion from stroms and not cry about and say the state should replace the sand. If the owners don't want the general public on their propery, then they should pay to have beach replaced themselves and stop crying about it. I don't understand the phrase "with all the public beach access along the coast", please explain to me where is all of this access. there is only three locations between Okaloosa and Walton counties the public can access the beach. by roy
Comment: The street should be the dividing line between homes on the sound side and public beachs and business on the Gulf side. The beach should be for everyone to enjoy. by linda
Comment: If the beach is restored with public funds, the owner should not be able to claim the extra land and enforce no trespassing on that land. If the owners pay for it themselves, then the extra land is rightfully theirs. by Brad

Plus, if any state or county money has been spent to refurbish the sands, I feel that the tax payers have a right to walk on or across it. As long the public is not walking into yards or between homes. by Bill
Comment: Any beach that is maintained with taxpayer dollars should be available for taxpayer use, with no exceptions. If a property owner wants to claim a right to property to the mean high tide line reguarless of how the line is impacted by natural processes he or she should be willing to loose their property completely to erosion or storms.They should not be allowed to reap the benefits of private beaches and expect the risks and maintenance costs to be assumed by the taxpayers. by Walt
Comment: The land is and always has been public, in my opinion. Public funding just reenforces the point. A DEED for public land is not worth the paper its written on. Also, we must all treat the beach as if we all own it. Pick up your trash, leave only footprints. by don
Comment: No, if their deed says to high tide line then that's it. The rest is for public use. I come from a state where you couldn't get near a beach for this same reason, we all should be able to enjoy the emerald coast's beauty. Not all of us can afford waterfront property. If, they get it in Walton Cty the rest will follow suit. Then, there goes tourism that the area depends on to help support the retail districts. Not only the locals but the tourist will be limited as well.
Comment: If taxpayer money is paying for the rebuild then taxpayers should have access to the area. If the homeowner wants to pay for the restoration then they may have the right to say who comes and goes. If they are not willing to pay for the restoration then they should have no say in who has access to the beach. Either put up or shut up. by Barbara

Comment: If the govt(county,state,or federal) puts a penny into the fund to restore the beach then I as a tax payer should have a right to enjoy my taxes. If the homeowners are the ones that pay for it by themselves, then by all means make it private so only they can enjoy it. If it comes down to the bank eroding and the house falling into the water, then no one should hear any crying that the govt should do something aboout the fact that they chose to live/build there. by James

Comment: If the private property owner pays for the sand himself it's his property . If the government pays for it, it's public. COMMON SENSE when you build a sand castle in the sand the water always washes it away. This includes beach front property.I can't use it so why do I have to pay for it.Don't they have home owners insurance, if they do make them include sand owners. Then they can pay their own premiums so then they can claim private property. by Margaret
Comment: No, I pay higher taxes and insurance due to the losses these beachfront homes have during storms so why should I not have the same rights to so called public beaches that they do? I believe the state should declare all beachs public property like California and other states have. by Roy

Comment: No they shouldn't. Florida beaches should all be PUBLIC beaches as they are in other states such as Hawaii. In Hawaii it is against the law to block public access. The property line should run only to the beach and then it should be open to all to enjoy. by Steve

Comment: No. The beaches should belong to the public. They should be able to enjoy the beaches even if they cannot afford to build a house on them. They support the upkeep and repair of those beaches and should be able to use them. by B.
Comment: All of Florida beaches and water should always be public. We live on a canal which is public for anyone who wants to enjoy it for riding or fishing and our homeowners always foot the bill for the maintenance through MSBU's. by V

A retirement community & tourist attraction ,we are known for having the world's most beautiful beaches.Some yourist come & walk along the beach & take pictures . I think this is just absurd. Comment: NO! I am tired of these land barons crying foul. When they put up private property signs and call the authorities to arrest one for "trespassing" on their property, then I know we are dealing with rich land barons. The beach is and will always be public property and not dependent on high water marks etc. by Deborah
