Confederate Heritage license plate: Do you think the state should offer a 'Confederate Heritage' license plate?
Comment: No, when we chose to display the confederate flag on our licenses plates then we leave ourselves open to displaying all flags defeated by those that were in support of America's beliefs and values. from Pensacola, Florida by Charlie
Comment: My Wife and I are both
Southerners. There was no more
gallantry, chivalry, and cour-
age than that of the Southern
Officer Corps. General Lee
burned no homes in his forays
North, commited no attrocities
Can the same be said of sherman? While not fashionable
we love our heritage and would
choose to honor it with such a
plate. from Pensacola, Florida by Robin
Comment: they have taken every thing southern from us we should get this they took our song
Comment: other groups get to have their heritage displayed as they wish, so should those with a tie to this part of American history. no reverse discrimination should be allowed
from milton fl by robin
Comment: Of course the state should offer the historical plate. After all, FL was once part of an independent country which many of our ancestors fought and died for - the Confederate States of America. from Navarre, FL by Ron
Comment: The reason he said it is not Race is so you and some of the black wont jump on the wagon about race. PUT the plate out for sale. from Pace, Fl. by Sam
Comment: No way should there be another "specialty" plate offered to the people of Florida. I totally agree with the statement above. This is "looking for trouble." If this is the best a lawmaker can do for the state and "his people", we don't need (him)! Tsk tsk. from Crestview by Lucy
Comment: I agree with the comments here. from Crestview by William
Comment: it is my heritage from pnsacola fl by al
Comment: I see nothing wrong with a
Confederate Heritage Plate. I am so tired of people getting offended at any and everything. Grow-up and realize the Civil War was not all about slavery - it is History. from Pensacola,Fl by Lela
Comment: I like the idea of a Confederate Heritage plate. What is wrong with showing pride in our past? I do not understand how race even comes into this. from Crestview, FL by Claude
Comment: I agree with Bob, People would see it as a race issue, that is just something that is just not necessary. They are more important issues that need to be addressed. from Pensacola by Barbara
Comment: Absolutely not from Gulf Breeze by Don
Comment: There are SCV plates in other Southern states. This is NOT a racial issue but one of heritage. The Battle Flag is not the only one hijacked by a radical group. They also always have an American Flag. There are car tags that I do not care for, but it's not my car they are on. Let us celebrate our heritage. It wasn't all about slavery and learning about the war should not be offensive to anyone. from Pensacola by Pam
Comment: The Confederate heritage is as much history in the South as is African-American history in the south (and the rest of the nation). The state already has so many tags representing private interest groups, why not one more? from Cantonment, FL by Paul
Comment: Personally speaking, we have license plates that relate other things that serve a purpose. This tag would serve its purpose as well. It would deliver a message that as an American, southern born, we are proud of our heritage. The flag has never meant to offend anyone but in some cases it does. No different than listening to loud music even though you don't want to, because it was left on while the person went into the store or because it was passing you by. No offense taken and just a way of life. But we should just accept it and move on. Education is very important why not take the time to understand pride can't be taught but is a heritage. from Navarre, Fl by John
Comment: The fact that many people would see the flag as racist gives legitamacy to the ignorant people who distorted the flag's meaning to begain with. We should not be ashamed of our heritage, we should learn from it.
Comment: Yes,we should have the right to honer all the people that died in the union and confederate army. And that is our heriatage, for all that has served.Regaurdless of race or color. It is still history and we should still honer that and many other things in history. from Pensacola,Fla. by Denise
Comment: why does some people find the flag offensive. not all blacks find it that way, but just a few does,so that's the way it's supposed to be. well i hope it comes about because i'd buy one no 2 of them. and i'm not a racist, some of my best friends are blacks. bet i don't see this on television by doug
Comment: If the problem is in the battle flag display why not have is changed to a map of the CSA and avoid the problem. As one who may qualify to be a member of the Sons of The Confederate, I, also believe that Heritage of all should be preserved. The Civil War was fought for the right to succession, and (according to history that I recall) in the beginning there were some 25,000 blacks that fought under the battle flag. The war was only said to end slavery near the middle of the war. from Pensacola/FLA by Frederick
Comment: Most Southerners find nothing controversial about the Confederate flag. It's as American as Old Glory and represents the southern US. The ones who attempt to make it controversial do so in an effort to further their own political agenda, which is usually racial extortion of legislators or to re-write history. from Navarre, FL by William
Comment: I think the proposal of a confederate license plate is a great idea. I am one of many who are very proud of my confederate heritage and would proudly display this plate. My praises to Rep. Donald Brown from Crestview Florida by Brad
Comment: I think we should honor those who served in defense of their homeland. The average Confederate soldier was a poor farm boy who volunteered to defend his home against an invader. Honoring these men is part of our heritage and history and should not be forgotten in the haste to be in the politically correct realm of the news media. from Cantonment/FL by Ron
Comment: The state of Florida offers a plate titled, Live the Dream, with MLK's picture on it. That is as racist as a confederate symbol would be. If the confederate tag can't be displayed, then the one for Black Heritage should be removed. from Jay,Fl. by Barry
Comment: yes, i think it would be great.im glad to see someone finally stepping up for those of us who love our confederate heritage. everyone from gays and lesbians to africans and mexicans can display symbols of there beliefs and heritages and i think it would only be fair for the few true proud southerners left to do the same if they so wish. if one or many dosent want to see the confederate heritage symbol then maybe they should leave the south so that they dont have to look at it....Bob. from florida by jimmy
Comment: Enough already!!! While the State of Florida is simmering from multitude of problems bred in the legislature, here comes another controversial issue which should not even get considered as a bill. Isn't Representative Brown busy enough as chairman of the committee on insurance? Or the other four or five committees which he's a member? from Milton, Fl by Abe
Comment: git off the south yankees go home. let us honor our tradition, dont like it ya move out(please)i will help fund it. from munson, fla by bobby
Comment: Is there a Black Heritage tag?
If not, let those blacks who
object to the South's pride in
their heritage, petition and
get their own heritage tag.
Just because blacks don't like
the flag, doesn't mean that it
erases the historical fact that the Confederacy did indeed exist and good people
who believed in their cause
gave their lives for it.
Seems like a fair deal to me.
Have a Black Heritage tag, if
there isn't one already) and
a Confederacy Heritage tag.
Sounds fair, balanced and equal to me. from Pensacola, FL by Lee
Comment: I firmly believe in freedom of speech. I served in the military and also like my heritage. Others do, so why not let the sons of confederate veterans have a specialty tag. Most people that like the confederate flag is from heritage and not for race. from Milton, Fl 32570 by David
Comment: I personally have no disrespect for any race. Yet I do love my heritage and love the confederate flag and if most really studied history they would know that there were a lot of black people that fought for the confederate flag and that the war was not all about race. It would be an honor to have a specialty tag of that nature. I would buy it and support it from Milton, Fl 32570 by David
Comment: It has noting to do with race, and all to do with Heritage. Some people are always wanting to burn the Confederate Flag or symbol, but if you stop & think about who's flag is responsible, my god people look no further than your on United States flag yes hard to remember, Ok, Anwser this ? who sailed over and captured the slaves, to bring back for sale in the forts and what Flags were flying over said fort or township? Why Yes it was a U.S. Ship and yes a U.S. Flag so do not get me wrong I did my time in the service, 73-94 Army Ret. and if anyone trys to burn one of theses, it not going to be a perrty site. All I got to say is, it is Heritage not race. read your history from Pensacola, FL by Michael
Comment: why not?....we already have so many plates for other causes...why should this one be any different? from munson, fl by dianne
Comment: Are we going to pretend that the Confederacy didn't exist? Should we just rewrite history? I am certainly not ashamed of my southern heritage and I think we need to stop being so silly and over analyzing everything. by K
Comment: the license plate is a great way to express you pride in your heritage, it is not racist. from Pensacola, Florida by Colleen
Comment: I don't think this tag would be anymore racist than the NAACP, BET, Miss Black America, Black collages, etc. from Pace, Fl by Gene
Comment: These are american veteran's, that have sacrificeed there live's. The licence plate is a perect way to pay the respect that they deserve. from Navarre by Joseph
Comment: I believe that people should stop crying over every little thing, Stoping throwing in the race card everytime you see a rebel flag. We should pay respect to our veterans, past and present. from Fort Walton Beach by John
Comment: this is ridicules! this is just fuel for racists to officially claim they are racists and profit from it! all the "confederate" organizations are nothing but a "whites" only club! it does not matter if their ancestors were poor whites or rich slave owners, they both looked down on the slaves and anyone who is not of the same skin color. many of times here in p'cola, i've heard that certain families have been here for a long time and claim they founded this city...wonder how many slaves they owned to get to where they are???? from p'cola fl by h
Comment: A specialty tag to honor our confederate veterans is an awesome idea! Whether we like it or not these veterans were American. My great greatgrandfather was in the "Florida 5th Infantry" during the civil war. I would definitely purchase that tag to honor him. Benny (MSgt USAF ret) from Navarre, Fl by Benny
Comment: No more individualized plates. (Period). We have so many tags in this state now, that nobody can keep up with them without a cheat sheet. Put yourself in the place of the poor cop that has to know when he stops you if your tag is legal or not. The "tags" we do have aren't utilized, so why add more to the pile? Sure some may buy it, but the majority of Floridians are going to accept what the state gives them. I personally can care less about this, as I think there are better causes; what do we expect next--a tag for having ten fingers, two feet, multiple cars? The whole concept is getting out of hand, I think. Florida's elected representatives have better things to do I am sure, like make themselves a roller rink in the state capitol. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: yes i do not see why you can not.ALABAMA HAS IT. from milton,fl. by william
Comment: why not aren't a lot of the specialty tags out there today controversial to some one i would but one i have a lot of civil war history in my family from pensacola by jim
Comment: i do think we should because i think there should be a variety and i like the idea because i would get the tag from milton, florida by autumn
Comment: we have a King Jr & abortion
tag.I say Hell Ya ,Ill take 4 the next renewal. Thanks for asking. from Mary Esther FL. by Jimmy
Comment: If they make one for Black history then they need one for Confederate Heritage. I won't buy either, the plain tag is enough. from Pace Florida by N
Comment: heritage is what u make of it.it is only hater if u want it 2 b and i think u should b able 2 show your heritage.and b proud of it no matter what it is people should not bable 2 take the heritage away from any person from niceville florida by jamie
Comment: If the State is considering issuing a Confederate Heritage license plate, then why not alos consider an African American Heritage license plate and include and symbol of an African slave in chains on it. This is ridiculous. The Conferates lost the war and should accept the fact that the ideology of their flag was also defeated with that war. If the Sons of the Confederate Veterans want to raise money to honor their dead and the ideology of their dead, let them do it without the State of Florida offending not only its citizens, but also the entire US citizeship population. Florida has real issues that we should be focusing on, like the recently proposed $.11 tax on gas for Escambia county, or the outrageous property tax burden it places on new homeowners. If Florida is not careful it will lose its status as good place to retire. At the rate its legislators are going, Florida will known as a good place to stay away from. from Cantonment, Florida by Dianne
Comment: I think it would be a great idea.It was a battle flag and you can't please everyone. from fwb,fl by Karen
Comment: your telling us to erase our heritage, and bring from africa another heritage,NO WAY from pen,fl by rick
Comment: there is a MLK Jr memorial, a drive, and also a black history month. what is wrong with the confederate flag? The ones it offends is the ones who doesnt understand the real reason behind the Confederate War from pace,fl by terry
Comment: I dont think we need to be wasting sensless time on what some people may think is important to there heritage. No one goes around purposly telling others to stop praising there backround or religion. from Pace,Fl. by Justin
Comment: I PERSONALLY WILL BUY ONE FER MY 3 TRUCKS AND BOAT AND 2 TRAILERS. YES WE NEED THIS TAG. GET RID OF SOME OF THE OTHER TAGS. LETS GET REAL, THIS IS LIVLIHOOD HERE, WHETHER ANY FEELS IT BE RACIAL OR NOT. from MUNSON,FL. by BOBBY
Comment: Why shouldn't it be offered? No one is forced to purchase it if they don't want to, but at least it's a choice for them. As you said, there are over a hundred specialty tags and yet for some reason(?hmmmm) they have never sparked the controversy that this one has.If you know your history of the flag , then you will know that it has never been about race, but when you mention the confederate flag to people, they automatically assume that it is.Why? because people never take the time to check facts, they just repeat what they ASSUME to be fact. Maybe I just don't get it... I didn"t realize that Saving the manatees(for example) was as important as taxes, affordable housing, insurance reform and healthcare, for it and all the other specialty tags were passed and most people did not even have a clue that there were so many, until now, when this particular one has came up.I shudder to think what would happen if someone wanted to come out with a license plate for christians that read JESUS SAVES. (Hmmmmmm) from Allentown, Fl by P.J.
Comment: Enough is enough. We have too many license plates as it is! I am not saying no to specifically a Confederate tag, but to ANY new tag! from Pace by Melinda
Comment: This is noting but trying to stir the pot to get attention.
Representative Donald Brown of Defuniak Springs needs to find him a job at a local eatery andf stir some chili, it shows his I.Q. is not high enough with this proposal to address issues to make peoples lives better-but seems to love chaotic back lash.
I really feel sorry for Americans who vote in people they think will make things better and end up with "Forest Gump"--sorry Forest--your standards are a lot higher and values. from Pensacola,Florida by D
Comment: thank you from milton, fl by mike
Comment: The German swastika was originally a symbol of pride for the German people to unite them and regain their self esteem. Germany was very downtrodden and Hitler came along to instill pride in their heritage and uplift the country. Do you see what the swastika turned out to represent? This is much like the confederate flag. I know what it was orig meant to be.....but it ended up being a symbol of misery, torture and death. We don't need to display it in any form. from Pensacola, FL by Elise
Comment: I believe having lived in the south most of my life that if people want a confederate flag as a license plate the so be it. For most people these days it is not about race, the confederate flag to most southerner's means their southern heritage, their southern upbringing. There is nothing wrong with that. I personally would not drive around with one on, but if I did that I don't think anyone should tell me not to, it is my decision. from Adelanto, CA by Stacy
Comment: I would like to see the flag on lot more then a tag. one reason its pretty , and too mlk is ever where so why not our flag? from pensacola fl. by georgia
Comment: It does represent the south's heritage. We have relatives that served in the confederate army. We are not ashamed of this. from Cantonment, FL by L
