Guns at work: Should employers be forced by law to allow employees to bring guns to work?
Comment: If I am permitted by the state of Florida to carry a concealed weapon on me in most businesses, why should my employer be allowed to say I cannot store that weapon in my vehicle? If this is allowed, what's next? Since I work in the U.S., if my employer doesn't like foreign cars, I can't park my Toyota in their parking lot? It's not like I'm taking my gun into the office and leaning it against my desk. from Jay,Fl. by Barry
Comment: ok...let me get this straight...these paranoid, crazed individuals who are afraid to leave their house without a gun are trying to force employers to abide by the law so they can carry it to work? you got to be kidding me! so, what happens when these psychos gets fired, gets into an arguement with a customer or fellow employees and the anger gets to him/her and start "combining" everyone in that place of business? no i do not think that these folks should be empowered to determine life or death issues. these gun nuts need to be institutionalized...not employed! this law does not enhance the safety of other people, it endangers them...everyone is a "law abiding" citizen with a gun until, something happens. lol! these are the very same type of individuals who i get into arguements about social/political issues and threaten me with their guns (concealed permits) when i do not agree with them and they know they are losing an arguement with me...the mentality of "i have the power to kill you if you do not agree with me" is the premises of the mentality of the folks who worship the NRA! from pensacola by h
Comment: The NRA is right. Searching some one's car without a search warrant is Illegal. Where there is gun control there is more crime, as law abiding citizens don't have guns but criminals will. from Milton/FL by Thomas
Comment: yes we have the right to carrie firearms ion our auto. from milton, fl by dana
Comment: we have the right to carry a fire arm in our personal autos, there should be no question about it. by dana
Comment: The employees already have the right -
Yes, I understand that there is such a bill before the State Legislature, and such things as gun control bring out the passions in people; however, there is also a question pertaining to the 2nd Amendment before the US Supreme Court regarding the interpretation of the language of that Amendment.
Regardless of how the Florida Legislature votes, the issue will remain passionate and will likely be passed up to a higher court for a decision under appeal by either side.
In my mind, the 2nd Amendment, at least at the present time, is not subject to the 10th Amendment and is not a matter of “States Rights”. Basically the states don’t have a choice, and whose parking lot it is does not matter in that regard. At least not right now, or until the day when the Supreme Court decides on the meaning of the language; the words “ . . . shall not be infringed . . .” will be the law of the land, just like Row v. Wade is; whether we as individuals like it or not.
Isn’t the freedom to debate these issues wonderful! Thank goodness the First Amendment is not a “States Rights Issue” and cannot be legislated out of existence by the State Legislature.

Comment: I don't think that anyone wants employees to be able to walk into work with a firearm, but to keep a firearm secured in your vehicle should be an individuals right. Should an employer have the right to know that the employee has a firearm in the vehicle - maybe. No one should have a handgun in the vehicle without a license to carry, but many people have gone through the trouble to obtain the license to carry a handgun for their own protection. Many hunters also carry their firearms in the vehicle during hunting season. They aren't looking to hurt anyone, just to go hunting after work... from Allentown / Florida by Lowell
Comment: This is worded wrong. Guns are being left in locked parked cars, not carried into the work place. A concealed weapons permit comes with a list of places that weapons aren't permitted. We have a right to bare arms. The parking lot is not the work place. Employees 'clock-in' inside the building. A local employer can not take away our rights as citizens. from Pensacola, FL by Nona
Comment: No one will be able to count or report the number of crimes that have been prevented by Fl residents who having access to a gun in their car went home to work another day. Predators look for the weak or timid, a gun equals any encounter. Why is the Chamber pro criminal and anti residents rights? I wonder. from Pensacola/Fl by Lewis
Comment: I'm amazed at your apparent lack of comprehension of the problem. It's not about hunting. It's about storing a defense weapon in a private vehicle (castle doctrine) for use coming to and going from work. Neither the police nor the employer will assume responsibility for your safety on the road or for that matter in the work place. from Cantonment, FL by Don
Comment: Until an employer can guarantee my safety it is up to be to use my second amendment right to protect myself. If I missuse that right there are other laws for punishment. from Cantonent, FL by Steve
Comment: THE HEADING ON THIS ARTICLE READS LIKE THE EMPLOYEE IS TRYING TO TAKE THE GUNS INSIDE THE WORK PLACE, NOT LEAVE IT IN A LOCKED CAR. from PENSACOLA by DONALD
Comment: As is frequently the case, your question is biased and incorrect. The question is not bringing guns to work, but bringing in there cars to the parking lot. BIG difference. As a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon, not allowing me to carry in my car to my work parking lot would violate my right to carry from home to work and back. This as another attempt by the anti-any-gun society to gradually nibble away at 2nd amendment freedom to bear arms, until there is nothing left. Then only criminals will have guns. By the way I am retired, so I would not be affected by this law, but I argue on principal.

Comment: The answer to the question is an unequivical "no". Albeit the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution gives all of us with "legal capacity" the right to "bear arms"; that same amendment does not mandate the carry of weaponry to the workplace. Unless employers are law enforcement agencies or security licensees, I don't see any need for a gun in the workplace. from Mary Esther, Fl. by Tom
Comment: they are needed for personal protection. from pensacola, fla. by bonnie
Comment: why, does one to have a firearm at work? This,is crazy. Keep, the firearms at home,or with the hunters or lawenforced, what if you work at a school! What? Just, think about it! from Jay,Fl. by Barbara
Comment: If an employee can not keep a firearm in their vehicle while at work; how is it possible to be able to defend themselves with their firearm during the drive to and from their place of employment? from Milton, Florida by Alan
Comment: Yes Some of us have to work or travel into unkown areas. We have a right to protect ourself doing this as long as your qualified. from gulf breeze by tim
