"Tropic Thunder": Do you believe the use of the word 'retard' is appropriate in a comedy?
Comment: It's a comedy. It's designed to make you laugh. Unfortunately, people laugh and joke at fat people. I'm overweight and I laugh the hardest. by Diana
Comment: The word retard is used as part of a diagnosis; mental retardation. In the movie it is used, not to refer to a person who is mentally retarded but rather to refer to someone who is not but is acting as though they are. This is obviously meant as satire and comedy. Timothy Shriver is on his way to sounding like Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton. from Pensacola/FL by Concerned
Comment: This is in fun, not meant to offend anyone. We are too sensitive, just laugh and have some fun. Pat from pensacola, FL by pat
Comment: ok...where were the protesters for minority causes? where are they to defend the "other" people who suffer through sterotypes every day? especially down here in the south!? "further exclusion and isolation"...yeah, i guess they understand our point now! from P'COLA by H
Comment: How many words should we ban? Everyone is going to be offended at somthing in their lives. By you giving these few people their 15 minutes of fame, you are helping legitimize "political correctness." I saw the movie, "Iron Man" three times because I liked it. I am going to see "Tropic Thunder" five or six times just to protest against these people. I suspect the real protest about this movie is because it makes the left look like the idiots they are. from Niceville, FL by Sam
Comment: I have a mentally disabled child and I hate when the "r" word is used as a joke. It is simply mean. from Navarre by Wanda
Comment: African-Americans ditest being referred to as by the "N" word; Italians, the "W". I have never liked racial slurs or remarks that diminish capabilities or physical appearances. Someone cannot help what race he is, neither can someone help what physical or mental status he is. from DeFuniak Springs, FL by Cesare
Comment: The use of the word retard is not used in my home plus I dont find humor in it at all. I believe if Ben Stiller had a retarded child he would not be using this word. from Pensacola by Fran
Comment: what about the "g"word that takes the name of our Lord in vain?Is everyone willing to accept this?If so then that makes all of us retards! from pensacola fl. by judy

Comment: Any label that is derogatory to any group of people is totally not acceptable, even in a comedy situation. I was a teacher of educationally disadvantaged children for 32 years, and I, for one, have a great abhorence of the word "retard" on any occasion. Those who resort to such terms for human beings have a lack of understanding and care for these precious people. from Ft. Walton Beach, FL by Patricia
Comment: Are you kidding? Is THAT what all the hype is about? It's a comedy. I don't see much protesting of these films about rappers with all the *F* words and other vulgarities. You people make me sick sometimes. from Milton/FL by A
Comment: I can not beleive that someone would write such a movie without even a thought of other's feeling's. I am a mother of an adult child that is mentally challenged. Just from what I have heard about the movie I will not see it and will advise other's to do the same. My adult child is a productive citizen, work's and pay's taxes also.Which is more than some normal people do what ever is normal. This has really hurt me bad.I beleive that the money to make the money should have been used for thing's,like medical researh. from PENSACOLA FL by JERRIE
Comment: To answer the question, No I do not believe use of that word in a "comedic sense" is not appropriate. It serves to do nothing more than perpetuate the sterotypic "sub-class" status symbol. As a race, we humans are always trying to do the right thing, but at the same time we tend to perpetuate those bias we know are wrong. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: It's a comedy...they make fun of everything!! from Milton, FL by Kim
Comment: yes I do think its appropriate. people shouldnt be worring about small problems. they should be worring about the big issues. if they think retard is bad then what about the use of "god" in shows or movies. or cursing in kid movie from milton florida by courtney
Comment: Well with me having a child who is slow in his progression of developing retard is just a phrase. I also worked the handicap children in a local school. Kids don't retard as a direct attack upon them. Some of the kids themselves made jokes regarding the word retard.
If people start picking out certain things in movies that is offending to them in every movie. Actors and actresses would be out a job. A movie is made for enjoyment; not to offend people.
I feel this topic should be dropped it's just a phrase not ment for any emotional or traumatizing damage to those whom it offended. Tropic Thunder is a good comedy. from Pensacola/Fl by Tracy
Comment: that is one of the most derogatory remarks in the English language!nobody should EVER say that word! from mary esther, FL by madison
Comment: Yes, it has an R rating for a reason, there is a certain level of language and improper content expected in an R rated film and this has been the norm in many films that were not criticized at all from Mary Esther, FL. by Patrick
Comment: Yes it is offensive but also the use of the "F" word and the use of the Lord's name. from Milton by D
Comment: I DO NOT THINK IT IS RIGHT TO HAVE THAT WORD IN COMEDY SHOW BECAUES I HAVE A HANDYCAP. from Pensacola by Jason
Comment: In these times everyones gets upset over something, everyone needs to take a breath, and remember, IT IS A MOVIE, GET OVER IT! They use every single offensie word(s) in movies since they were made, why make a fuss now? from Milton, FL by Walter
Comment: I for one, have had way too much of this wild eyed leftwing bed wetters and their PC police. If you or your kid are a "'Tard" you are a "'Tard", accept it, get over it & move on! from Pensacola by David
Comment: I think boycotting the film because of using the word retard/retarded is over the top. I think that people who call other people who are not actually mentally retarded "retard" are intending to make fun of the person who's acting stupid, and not trying to make fun of people who are actually mentally retarded. I've seen SO many TV shows and movies use those words in the same way. Why do people have their undies in a wad all of a sudden over THIS movie? This movie is like a "roast", ya know?
from Pensacola, FL by Jennifer
Comment: I do not think it is appropriate. I have a learning disabled daughter and she has had to deal with people calling her retarded throughout her life. To me the use of the r word is almost as bad as the use of the n word and have no place in a comedy. from Crestview Florida by Carol
Comment: i too agree that the word 'retard' in most instances is unsavory to say the least, but in this satire--leave the movie alone, they aren't referring to anyone individual with retardation, but probably to a situation or a person not using his full mental capacity. from pensacola, fl by georgia
Comment: This is not appropriate. As Americans we have freedom of speech; however, we should use that freedom to make wise decisions showing care and concern for others. from Crestview, FL by Misty
Comment: No, I don't think it should be banned. Much like other words, "retard" has formed into a slang word. If this movie isn't allowed to say "retard", why not ban all the movies and songs that use the word "nigger"? It too is now used as a slang word, and though many people still protest about its usage, it is still used. Thus, the term "retard" falls under this category. In the movie, it doesn't go specifically out to people with disabilities. I've seen blacks call whites niggers, so what's the problem? from Pensacola, Fl by Jamie
