Evolution: Do you believe evolution should be taught in Florida's public schools?
Comment: yes teach it! teach science in our schools and teach faith in the churches and other religious centers. let the "educated" young people ponder for themselves the conflicts of the two opposing theories! it is little wonder why our kids are failing so miserably compared to other kids across the globe in the academic studies. i do think it was this religion itself that ushered in the dark ages in europe to christianize it and the people welcomed the age of enlightenment when religious rhetoric was loosened a bit...they still burnt people at the stake when the theories they proposed went against the official church teachings! from p'cola by h
Comment: ABsolutly. Leaving out any point of view on the earth's history is to deny the true reason and meaning of education. from Pensacola, Fl by Mary
Comment: Evolution should definately be taught in Florida public schools. It becomes a problem when instructors teach evolution as fact. Students should learn the differences between a theory (a proposed explanation based on evidence) and a law (which has been proven). As long as schools teach evolution as a viable theory, then I see no problem in teaching it. from Pensacola, FL by Marianne
Comment: I can't imagine my children not understanding there is more than one explanation of creation. We live in a large mult-educational world. Don't limit our childrens knowledge from Destin by MaryAnn
Comment: They dont allow the bible to be taught which is true. Why teach about monkeys? I dont want my grandchildren being taught that! from Navarre FL by June
Comment: Public schools need to teach that we were all created by God in His image. from Pensacola, FL by Cyndi
Comment: If they want to teach evolution in the schools they should also teach creation from the Bible. from Pensacola,Fl by Deborah
Comment: If taught, it should be presented as a THEORY only. There is not sufficient evidence to prove it. It takes more faith to believe in evolution, in my opinion, than in creationism. from Pace, FL by Dana
Comment: I think BOB`s opinion is just that an opinion. let him teach his children evolution, let christians teach there children the truth about GOD being the creator of all life. Children have to be properly trained first by there parents before they can make up there minds about anything. Our society and the whole world is in a mess today because children are given choices to make up there minds at such early ages, when they were never taught anything significantly right to make up there minds about. from ft walton fl by davis
Comment: Evolution is a fact that is happening right before our eyes. It the basis of why everything in our universe is the way it is.
Neglecting our children from the truth is not helping, only hurting.
Why is everyone so scared of the truth? from FWB FL by Vanessa
Comment: I am surprised by such a biased opinion from WEARTV. from Navarre by Julie
Comment: It should not be taught unless Creation is also taught for those of us that believe that God created the world. It is too confusing to the children to be taught one thing by their parents and another theory by the schools. from Niceville, FL by Pat
Comment: Intelligent Design and Creationism are based upon faith NOT science and are, therefore, not appropriate for a school curriculum. from Pensacola by Bill
Comment: It is only marally fair that if they are to teach evolution in class at a government aided public school, then they must also provide the alternate view of the Bible and the Lord Jesus Crist as our Savior. That is the only correct and non bias view that should be acceptable. Either that or make both views as student elective classes. from niceville/florida by patrick
Comment: Why is this even being discussed seriously in any forum? Matters of faith should be addressed individually by every family - not in public schools. But please educate our children based on a scientific method which can be proved or disproved, questioned, tested and retested and results re-produced over and over. People who believe in creationism and/or that it should be taught to students should take those students out of public school and place them in other venues of education which cater to their biases. I do not want my son ridiculed for his lack of a proper education.
Should evolution be debunked and creationism proven to be fact? I will take my lumps then and bow down with humility to those who believed otherwise. from Pace, FL by Charm
Comment: It is only morally fair that if they are to teach evolution in class at a government aided public school, then they must also provide the alternate view of the Bible and the Lord Jesus Crist as our Savior. That is the only correct and non bias view that should be acceptable. Either that or make both views as student elective classes. from niceville/florida by patrick
Comment: I believe God create the world and everything in it, including man. Gen.1:1-3 from Pensacola by Barbara
Comment: where is the seperation of church and state evangelicals have no right to argue what is taught in schools that are paid for by the public,if they do not like what is taught in public school , they can do as they wish with their private schools from pensacola,fl by sheldon
Comment: Call it evolution and test both them, an let the student's have the right to pick what they belive in. from Jay,Fl. by Barbara
Comment: I believe in a creator and a God and not a theory by Darwin. from Fort Walton Beach by Joseph
Comment: I have no problem with teching evolution in schools when it is taught for what it is, a theory. We teach our students to make dicisions based on the evdence.Where is the problem with teaching the theory of evolution alongside creationism and let students make an intellegent choice? from Pace by Rick
Comment: Evolution is still unproven and should not be taught as fact. from cantonment, fl by jim
Comment: Science Digest recently reported that 100 biologists, chemists, zoologists, physicists geologists, astrophysicists and other scientists with degrees from such prestigious universities as Cambridge, Stanford, Cornell, Yale and Berkeley are "skeptical over claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Darwin's theory of life is now being considered a failed "theory." Yet the text books continue to sell it as fact. It is easy to accept evolution as a bsis to "sooth the conscience" than it is to consider Godly influence. To say that evolution is a universally accepted theory in the world of science is a flat out lie. from Pensacola, FL by Johnny
Comment: Yes. I believe it should. I can never understand why people cannot believe in both creationism and evolution. Why can't it be both? God created everything, right? Well, that’s my belief. I believe both occur(red). That’s my two cents. from Cantonment, FL by Tory
Comment: Its a theory that young minds should be exposed to. It initiates the connection of idea of thought with a possiblity of the past. Great debate topic. from Milton by Priscilla
Comment: Evolution is total rubbish and nonsense being pushed by the releigous right, it DOES NOT BELONG in public schools. If a parent wants there child to learn this garbage then send them to Sunday school, where is belongs. Who says the dark ages are dead ? from Pensacola, FL by Sydelle
Comment: I feel that I survived a parochial school formal education, then a public high school education just fine; and I don't remember a word being said about the evolution theory. My point is that I survived schooling and I feel perfectly capable of making up my own mind as to what theories I choose to believe in. Yes the availability of such theory should be available (in a library) but I think that an argument over "other" cirricula problems would be more advantageous to all Floridians. If someone is interested, let them find a library (on their own) and read about it. from Mary Esther, FL. by Tom
Comment: Evolution has and aways will be a part of science. We are depriving children of a complete education in the sciences should we not teach evolution. It is imperativbe that we teach science in school and faith in the churches. from Pensacola, FL by James
Comment: Every generation in Florida should get more and more stupid 'til they all die out and make it a nice nature preserve.
It would make the interstates safer, too, since none of them are qualified to drive. from Mobile, Alabama by Rob
Comment: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!! Evolution honestly is someone else's belief (someone- who in fact- denounced his belief on his death bed if my history teaching is correct)just as religion is someone's belief. I know evolution is already being taught under a different title - that in itself is a disservice to our students. Do you really think they don't know exactly what is being taught. If evolution continues to be taught and the students be required to test on it - then there should be courses of the same requirements available on the Bible - THAT is the greatest history book of the world. If the law says we can't teach the Bible in school - then evolution shouldn't be taught either. It is being said "teach faith at home" - what about those studens who aren't exposed to faith at home? Let's be fair and teach both sides of the coin - THAT is only fair to our students. They can't decide how to "resolve any conflicts between the theories" if they are not fairly exposed to both. from Cantonment by Diane
Comment: If it has to be taught, teach as a possible theory, but also include creationism or Intelligent design. from Milton / FL by Jeffrey
Comment: Only those who feel that their children are so mentally challenged that they are incabable of making educated descisions could object to this. from Chnuchula, AL by Billy
Comment: This shouldn't even be an issue. Evolution is scientifically based, thus should be taught in schools with the idea that it is, like most things in science, a theory. If you want your child to learn about creationism then I suggest sending them to a Christian or other religiously based school. from Pensacola, FL by Charlie
Comment: By definition, the word theory does not mean FACT. That's what Evolution is, a theory. Although it has never been PROVEN it has been taught in public schools in America for DECADES. No other alternative is aloud within miles of a public school. Intelligent Design is just as pertinent as Evolution and BOTH could be included in cirriculum for the students to decide what to believe. Evolution has been losing it's luster in the true scientific community over the last several years...just like "Global Warming" (also not a FACT) from Milton, FL by Julie
Comment: If we teach the theory of evolution in school then we should also teach the
"theory" of God. Since I don't see that happening any time soon I vote no. My children will not attend any school that implies that they evolved from apes. And besides if in fact we did evolve from apes then why are we not evolving from them today? from pensacola,fl by Lillie
Comment: God is the Creator of all living things. Is it not evil enough that one cannot talk to Him, or pray, in public schools. Why push the lie of evolution down students throats.
Some schools do teach the Bible as an elective. Why not make evolution so too!?! from DeFuniak Springs by Cesare
Comment: I had to do a double take when I saw today's question come across the TV screen. I thought that surely your question was "Should creationism be taught in Florida public schools." But I heard the correct question you were posing! Without question evolution should be taught in the public schools. Churches are the proper venue for alternative explanations to be taught. I can't believe the results thus far that Bob just announced, with 56% of respondents answering "no" to the question! We are talking about PUBLIC schools! from Milton by Cheryl
Comment: I believe pigs can fly and I have the catapult to prove it!
Teach that! I want you kids to share my beliefs! No evolution? Perhaps Pensacola isn't evolved enough..... from Pensacola by Larry
Comment: In a diverse nation, public schools must be unbiased in their curriculum. To fulfill this, they must rely on logic and reason, and the fact is that there's more evidence supporting evolution than there is intelligent design. Bible stories were meant to be told in church, not to be forced onto everyone who attends a public school. from Pensacola, Florida by Jeff
Comment: Evolution is support by numerous. The Christians are support by lies and decite. lies and decite do not work, Christian will murder. from Bluewater Bay by Bruce
Comment: Evolution should not be taught in Florida's public schools. First, it is being taught as fact. Many of the most qualified authorities in the fields of physics and biology believe that it is a very poorly supported theory, far from a fact. Next, most academic text books are riddled with errors and fallacies. Finally, ask anyone you know to provide some verified scientific evidence of the theory of evolution and they will either not have an answer or offer incorrect data. Yet all of us continue to blindly assume that this theory still has merit. It's truely sad. Do a bit of your own research. Know why you believe what you believe. Don't be a lemming.
Thanks,
Jason from Fort Walton Beach, FL by Jason
Comment: they keep taking god out of school, teaching them this stupid theory, and they wonder why our kids dont know right from wrong. we teach them about god, and you make us out to be lier's teaching your lies. from Cantonment FL by Theresa
Comment: The Board of Education should stick to its guns here. It is basic scientific knowledge. The state of education in this country in the world arena falls abyssmally far behind MANY others, considering our far greater resources. To allow special interest groups to further whittle away a proper education would be a travesty. from Gulf Shores AL by Robert
Comment: I agree, teach unadulterated science in schools. Frankly I'm amazed this is even an issue. from Pensacola FL by Roselyn
Comment: Of course evolution should be taught-it's science! Creationism is a religious belief only and should not be taught in the public schools. from Gulf Breeze, FL by Shelley
Comment: Evolution is a not a proved fact and can't be proved. One provened fact is that you can get nothing from nothing. Time and chance are no more powerful than man is, so evolution can't inprove nature. from Gravd Bay AL by David
Comment: Evolution should be taught in school, becuase it is juwst something you should know childern should learn it that way they can deteire the differnce between creationism and evolution i think it is a vital part of the school curricular that they are missing out on from pensacola by jarvis
Comment: I am a Christian and believe the Holy Bible which states,God created the Heavens and Earth. He is our creator. Our nation was founded on Godly principals and our children and grandchildren have the right to to be taught the Truth and not someones theory. from Century,Fl by Cindy
