Ice cream truck drivers: Do you think background checks should be performed on ice cream truck drivers?

88.88% Yes
7.4% No

Comment: Yes! As the matter of fact everyone should have a back ground check. We're living in the last days when "men shall wax worse and wors, because of iniquity" abounding. from DeFuniak Springs by Cesare

Comment: Most definatly. These trucks attract children more than anything else. I surely do not want my child getting the wrong type of nutty-buddy from Pensacola, Florida by Robin

Comment: No I do not believe we should. We are getting carried away with background checks, raising prices more than we are already paying. The children should be supervised by a parent or adult and then we would not have to worry about the driver. What ever happened to taking reposibility for supervising our own children and not expecting the goverment to handle everything for us. Parents, get out off your sofas and outside with your children where you belong. from Crestview,Fl by Roy

Comment: definately a beckground check should be performed due to being present where children are allured too by bells.ice cream.treats.etc. enough said. from pensacola/fl by mark

Comment: Yes they need to have a background check because it does not take long for someone to be going through a neighborhood to know where everything is or what everyone's living habits are and to many children go to the road to buy ice cream unsupervised and anything could happen because it only takes a second and they will be gone. Like they say if you give them an inch they will take a mile. Remember it was not too long ago and they were looking for that ice cream van that was red, white, and blue because they were preying on children in Escambia County. from Milton,Fl. by Brandy

Comment: no one should be able to work by kid,who is a sex offender from pensacola,fl by jay

Comment: I am saying yes because our kids need protection from predators. I checked the predator's website and there are over 400 registered sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of where I live. It is sad that we have to do so much to protect our kids but it is a necessity now days. from Pensacola by Darlene

Comment: Ice cream truck drivers have access to children, an easy way for sexual prediators to get close or have access, of coarse a background check is needed. Like anyone who is a vendor at a school or anyone who has possible access to children. How will we know if they are not sexual offenders or predators if no back ground check is completed. The whole idea here is to keep the children safe, why not. Better safe than sorry. from PENSACOLA by LIZ

Comment: Last year, there was a strange van (not 'typical' ice cream truck) driving around our neighborhood with an ice cream sign on it and music playing. I followed the vehicle, and when he stopped for some children, I asked the man if he had a license to do what he was doing. He did not speak a word of English, or he pretended to not understand me. When I asked him for a name and phone number, he gave me a clipboard expecting me to give him MY name! I told him to get lost and stay out of our neighborhood, and the man promptly left the subdivision (Chateau Pres de la Mer near Florosa.) I also called the Okaloosa County Sheriff and notified them of the vehicle. from Mary Esther, FL by Craig

Comment: It isn't practical to check backgrounds on every adult a child may come in contact with on a public street. It would cause hardship and more expense for the good people trying to make a living. The responsibility for who a child comes in contact with belongs to parents. I can't fathom why an adult would allow a child to go to the ice cream truck or anywhere else alone until the child is old enough to learn how to recognize and avoid bad behaviors in an adult. It's more of parents wanting the government to protect children because they aren't willing to do it themselves. from Gulf Breeze, FL by Gina

Comment: It is all about protecting our children. from Eglin AFB, Fl by Irene

Comment: There is no substitute for attentive parenting. But we can't take enough measures to deter predators. Florida seems to have a high level of that kind of activity. I think anyone whose profession gives any opportunity to hurt a child should be checked. That includes not only but most especially pastors - and their families. Think that's stretching it a bit? Go on Google and enter "Ronna Therrell." from Pensacola, FL by Paul

Comment: We need to take every possible measure to protect our children. Any occupation that has direct contact with children should have a background check, including school bus drivers, daycare workers, teachers, etc.. Also should be checked for a history of violence/abuse. Children are vulnerable and need more protection. from Pace, FL by Chuck

Comment: Ice Cream truck drivers should have background checks, just like anyone else who is in contact with children. They're no better. from Pensacola, FL by Carey

Comment: If you work with or around children then yes you should have fingerprints and a background check. The results should be diplayed next to their business license for everybody to see. from baker,fl by bret

Comment: It just amazes me this is even a question and not a law. These people deal with nothing but children and I cannot count how many times I've seen parents send their children by themselves to get ice cream. I guess they just assume he's the ice cream man he would never. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's exactly what a predator is counting on, you as a parent, to think. There is just too much trust people put in people with jobs like the ice cream man. They should be required to provide backgrounds checks...the whole 9 yards. People need to start getting a grip on reality and stop trusting people because of the job titles they hold. A wolf in sheeps clothing....think about it! from milton, fl by rhonda

Comment: I think that any job that is directly involves children, such as child care, sports, and even ice cream truck drivers should have background checks. Anytime we have the opportunity to protect our children we should do so. Anyone in these roles should welcome the background checks, for they have nothing to hide....right? from Shalimar, Fl by Mary Alice

Comment: Isn’t it a job that deals mostly with children and don’t we do a check on our teachers because they deal with children? What about School Bus Drivers, don’t we require them to be checked? I don’t think a sexual offender or predator needs to be involved in a job where there are mostly children. The cycle needs to stop! We need to protect our children and be proactive not reactive. from Milton/Fl by Ramona

Comment: I definitely have a comment on the Ice Cream Truck subject. Several months ago my grandchildren were playing in my fenced-in back yard. I had the gate closed and they had never ventured into the front yard without my knowledge and permission. I stepped inside the kitchen for approximately one and a half minutes to get snacks for the grandchildren. During that brief time and without my knowledge, my six year old grandson heard the Ice Cream truck in front of my home, and totally out of character for him, bolted through the gate and went into the road, to the Ice Cream truck. When I came back outside and began to look for him and call him, I found him in the middle of the road, talking to the Ice Cream truck driver. Obviously, I was very, VERY upset and wanted to ask the driver NEVER to come down my road again. Thankfully it must have been a driver that really cared for children. But now, every time I even hear the Ice Cream truck music, it reminds me of how close I came to losing my grandson that day. I would like Ice Cream trucks completely banned before someone loses a child to traffic or to an Ice Cream truck driver that does not have the child's best interest in mind. It was also a reminder that children sometimes do things unexpectedly and out of character no matter how closely they are watched and no matter what warnings they are given for their protection. The Ice Cream truck music is a lure for the children and they don't always stop and think of the possible consequences of traffic and strangers. from Cantonment, Florida by Joyce

Comment: yes...definately from p'cola by h

Comment: If they check those who work in the school system and drive school buses, why wouldn't everyone what to check those who drive ice cream trucks? from Mary Esther, FL by Alan

Comment: Unfortunately, in today's perverted society, I say yes to background checks for them. No matter the occupation, there is just too many perverted folks running around to take a chance on our children being hurt. Maybe the problem stems from nobody having to take responsibility for his/her own actions; if we made everyone aware of taking responsibility for themselves, no matter what, we'd probably have a better society. from Mary Esther, Fl. by Tom

Comment: Yes, I see children in my area run up to these trucks. I would hope they would not mean any harm to our children but in today's society one can not be sure. And they can easly pull a child into these trucks with the lure of ice cream. from Pensacola by Tracy

Comment: Background checks should be administered on all workers would have contact with children. It should not matter whether you are a counselor, a doctor, a nurse, a police officer, a teacher, a janitor, or the ice cream man. If you do not have anything to hide, you should not have a problem with a background check. from Milton, FL by Hope

Comment: Alot of catholic priests have been convicted of crimes against children. Are we now going to require background checks on all catholic priests? Where does the parental responsibility for supervision of their children come into play?? from Molino, FL by Max

Comment: Since they would be dealing with the public directly, and children in particular, a thorough background check should be done. We don't need someone who may be a potential threat trolling our neighborhoods or children. from Navarre,FL by Kathryne

Comment: I SAY YES TO GIVING BACKGROUND CHECKS AND HEALTH INSPECTIONS TO ICE CREAM TRUCK DRIVERS. FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT THEY CAN BE A REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER AND TRYING A NEW WAY TO GET CLOSER TO LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS.THE HEALTH INSPECTION SHOULD BE GIVEN FOR THE SIMPLE FACT FROM WHEN I WAS GROWING UP THE ICE CREAM MAN THAT CAME IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS SAID HE URINED IN THE ICE CREAM. from PENSACOLA, FL by CHAKEITA

Comment: and who would pay fo this? Ultimately, the customer; and for what objective? from Navarre/FL by Gene

Comment: I feel anyone who deals with children should have a background check. If you work or volunteer (even a parent) in the schools you have to have a background check done. Why should they be any different. This is one more way to protect our children from Pensacola, FL by Paddy

Comment: Yes they do need a background check. Not only for the safety of the children, but also for drug dealers. We have one that comes down our road in cottage hill and goes to a house across the street that we suspect are dealing drugs. They stay there for a long time, sometimes for half hour to an hour and a half. We live on a dead end road and there is a lot of traffic in and out that don't stay very long at all when the ice cream man/woman comes to their house. We've called the sheriff dept on many occassions about these people but nothing has been done. from Cantonment, fl by Debbie

Comment: I think its a good idea to have the ice cream man checked out, because you cannot trust anybody now these days, but if its to keep the children out of harms ways, i'm for it. from milton, florida by steve

Comment: Yes, a background check should be done, and so are meter readers, Ministers, mall security guards, and everybody that will come in contact with children in the performance of their job. include in that, pet store workers, zoo workers etc., etc. from Milton, Fl by Abe

Comment: I think if your job requires you to come within arms reach of a child you should have an extensive backround check. from Ft. Walton Bch. by Paul

Comment: Absolutely! Anyone coming in contact with our children should have to pass a background check. from Pensacola by Shannon

Comment: Anyone who is in contact with our kids should be given a thorough background cover. There is too many perverts out there trying to get our kids as it is. from Pensacola, Fl by Martha

Comment: Even if you do back ground checks people also needs profiling. most sex offenders may have not been caught like the B.T.K. look at that gut. from gulf breeze by michael

Comment: i THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE BACKGROUND CHECKS, AND IF THEY COME OUT CLEAN THEN IT IS OKAY. i WILL NOT LET MY GRANDKIDS GO OUT TO THE ICECREAM TRUCKS AT ALL. There are way to many sex offenders and we need to protect these children. from pENSACOLA, fL by Diane

Comment: Yes! They are in direct contact with children. from Pensacola, FL by J

Comment: i absolutley think everyone who works with kids should have background checks!!!! from pensacola Fl. by brittany

Comment: i think everyone who chooses to work in a profession that involes contact with children definatly should have a backgroud check that should already be a requirement! Ice cream truck drivers, people that work at sports complexes, schools anybody who is in close contact with children i would rather be safe then sorry! I'm sure all parents would agree! from gulf breeze,fl by beth

Comment: ANYONE THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE A BACKGROUND CHECK DONE ON THEM. from pensacola by Tim

Comment: What kind of question is this? Of course!! I would never let my children near one to begin with, but I at least assumed that the drivers were legit. There are far too many "convenient" ways for our children to be violated in this country. Are we, as Proud Americans, really this naive? from Shalimar,Fl by Kerri

Comment: The ice cream man comes in contact with children all the time. from Pensacola, Florida by Angelique

Comment: Yes, I do think Ice Cream Truck Drivers should have a background checks, they have easy access to children. from Laurel Hill, Fl by Beverly

Comment: We need background checks on the icecream man and the asst. fire chief.
