Wildfires burn in central Florida
May 11, 2008 19:53 EDT

MALABAR, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say brush fires shut down roads in central Florida today and forced evacuations.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that portion of Interstate 95 in Brevard County was shut down because of heavy smoke from a blaze near Malabar.

Brevard County Fire and Rescue spokesman Orlando Dominguez says that in another part of the county, a fire forced residents out of about 100 to 200 homes near Cocoa.

Florida Division of Forestry spokesman Timber Weller says Between 500 to 600 acres burned in Voulsia County, causing additional road closures and another evacuation near Daytona Beach.
